There are several reasons to factory reset your Android 6.0 device. Sometimes a factory reset can solve problems you are having with the phone’s operation. It is also a solution if you have had your phone for a while, and have cluttered it with apps and random downloads–sometimes it is easier to just wipe the whole thing and start again.
The most common reason to factory reset your device is if you are moving on to newer, shinier technology and will no longer be in possession of it.
The factory reset process is easy and painless, but there are a few other tips worthy of your consideration. These tips are particularly important if you are ditching your phone for the next big thing or (shudder) an iPhone. You can shopsmart your dream phone at the best price.
Before you do your factory reset, it is highly recommended that you check a couple settings first so that you can easily access data you have stored on your phone later. If for some reason your phone is not set to backup automatically before you reset it, that data will be gone.
Android backs up app data, images, and contacts to your Drive account. These backups will be restored when you download the corresponding app after you reset or on your new phone. It backs up photos and contacts as well.
Here are the step by step instructions. The first three steps are optional but are highly recommended if you are selling or recycling your phone.
Enable Encryption
Step 1
Open settings by swiping down twice on the notifications bar. Tap the gear icon at the very top of the screen. Alternatively, you can open the app drawer from the home screen and open the settings menu from there.
Step 2
Under the Personal section, tap Security.
Backup Your Data
Step 1
Scroll down to the second section, Encryption. If it is already enabled, you’re good to go. If it is disabled, turn this setting on. This will ensure that after the phone is restored to factory settings, technically proficient miscreants cannot access any bits of personal data left over.
Step 2
Tap the back button to return to the main Settings menu. Under the Personal section tap Backup and Reset.
Step 3
If you wish to backup your data, make sure that the first setting, labeled “Back up my data” is listed as on. It is important to note that the system only backs up your data if the phone is being charged, you are connected to a Wi-fi network, and your phone has been idle for an hour.
Erase All Data
Step 1
Tap Factory data reset.
Step 2
A screen will appear indicating what data will be erased from the internal storage of your phone. This includes music, photos, user and app data, accounts, as well as time and date settings.
It will also list any accounts, such as Facebook, you have added to your phone. If you are ready, click Reset Phone at the bottom of the screen. It will require you to confirm your PIN as a security precaution. Make sure your phone is plugged in. That’s it! Your phone will be like it was when you first opened the box.
